Can the Seahawks put together another championship run? I’ll discuss prospects, development, and the chances at a State Title.

Guards

(1): Well the door is left wide open here, BK (Billy Keller, Jr.) has run the 1 spot since he was a Freshman, but the departure of Mason Jones called for additional size at the other guard spot. I think SY (Steven Yoon, Sr.) and BK will get their ample time at rotation at the 1 spot. BK offers the size and drive, but SY has the experience and quickness. This “1-2” Combo should be a great weapon for the Hawks.

(2): As the team continues to get deeper with each position, the 2 spot is going to be easy to shuffle and predict this year. With BK, SY, AD (Aaron Delgado, Sr.), CR (Christian Rivera, So.), AJ (Avery Johnson, Sr.), and AB (Anthony Brown, Sr.)

Billy Keller: BK was a solid piece of the puzzle last year. His reliable 8.5 PPG won a few close games in tournaments (both post and pre-season) and was a decisive part of the defense last year. Expect a breakout year as teams focus on other parts of the team, leaving him 1 on 1 often, and he’ll step up to the challenge.

Forwards:

(3): Here comes the fun; two upper-echelon D-1 Talent guys can fill this spot, with ease and effectiveness. CJH could be looking to put AB in this spot considering his future, but will use AJ in this spot for the well-being of his team. As shown in the past, the 3 spot has been a vital part of OV’s success, and I am not worried at all about the depth or differences in this particular area.
He is quick enough to handle guards, and has enough athleticism to contest bigger guys. In basketball terms, Avery can lead the fast break and dish off an assist, or slam hit home by jumping over the rim and through the net. It seems as if he can jump all the way through it when you are watching him.

Avery has been hurt by a 88 overall rating from ESPN, although it should be much higher because of how much upside he has. The only flaw that he has was his traditionally low-arc jump shot, but you can't ask everyone to be like AJ Abrams right? As for the rest of his shooting, Avery has a terrific plant-and-shoot fadeaway shot that is just smooth as silk. It got him plenty of points in the post season as defenses started climbing in caliber. This summer, Avery has been more of a power player, he has gone to the dunk much more often as opposed to the layup that he has used in the past. High percentage shots are a great way to put a dent on the scoreboard when you can jump over people.

Shooting is only part of his offensive repertoire. Much like Jrue Holiday, Avery has a knack for passing the rock. No-look passing and high-tempo "no-dribble" fast break routines are his strong points, and his game-breaking ability is very evident when he has a smaller defender on him.

On defense, the stats project his ability. He is just a terror in the paint, but he's still a guard. That vertical leap is so insane, you'll just have to see it for yourself. Dominating blocks are still his favorite, but he can easily steal the ball as well. Rebounding is another thing that Avery leans on. That vertical leap, again, helps him snatch balls... off the board. That's just how high he gets.
One had an ESPN scout in attendance. That scout proceeded to rate Anthony (on a 100 point scale, 1 being the worst, 100 being the best) a 97, comparing him to Josh Smith of the Atlanta Hawks.

The Bigs:
(4): A heavy dose of the “killer” rotation of AJ, AB, mixed with some CM (Chris Martinez, Sr.), and Shig (Andrew Shigemasa, Sr.) who can all play both the 3 and 4 spots, should make the offensive and defensive boundaries basically unstoppable. I don’t see a situation where talent or ability could be the problem.

(5): Well, this is the most interesting unit IMO (In my opinion), because we don’t know who we could see. There’s AB, and AJ, also CM, but you could stick to tradition with Okey (Ryan Okwudibonye, Sr.), and mix in returner TG (Trey Gourdine, Jr.) and legacy that is CC (Connor Clifford, So.). The depth is undeniable, but everyone knows; a big guy is necessary to make it deep into the playoffs (see State Championship last year). So with Okey being the guy, he’ll need to step up, make some plays, and continue to dominate on the boards. The prospect of CC to back him up is a very bright one, as I think he could have a very big impact on this team in crunch time, especially if he can get some points off of fouls or the fear factor (He’s 6’9” right?). The post is a must this year.
Fearless Predictions:
With the TOC as a primer, the talent of the roster should be put up in prime fashion in their own backyard. I can honestly say that a good prediction could be a top-4 finish, if not the championship. The UCLA fan in me says to let them iron out the kinks, but the numbers say that OV is looking at a possible pre-season boost.

The AZ Tournament is very intriguing to look at in terms of national ranking, but should be a good experience none the less.

Conference play should be relatively easy; especially with the amount of talent this year.

The HB Shootout should be fun as the Hawks could get the Oilers again, qualifying their bragging rights for yet another year.

The Extravaganza is always fun at Mater Dei’s insane gym; I’ll wait till later to get a better analysis of Orange Lutheran.

In the post season, I think the ability of the rotation and depth to back up the amount of talent and experience should give the Hawks a considerable edge over the rest of the field. If the Hawks can get through the CIF tournament without any form of doubt, I can see them really marching deep into state tournament, all the way to the championship. Of course, that’s a long time from now.

Go Hawks:
A 3-5 record, with 2-5 Division 1 talent players is something to sneeze at.

So here is the situation: Ocean View is an astonishing 0-4 in league, 3-5 on the season. Ocean View has been outscored by a seemingly small margin of 24 points. The talent has shown flashes of capability, but the lack of sufficient coaching and playcalling has dragged them down. The Seahawks were poised to end massive losing streaks against conference powerhouses Segerstrom and Westminster, but fell short either on 2-Minute drills, or late game-planning on defense and special teams. The Seahawks outplayed Santa Ana, but was out-coached, and didn’t make adjustments to screen passes; eventually setting new records for the Saints. Against Orange, the team never got it going, period.

So do I predict a stunning turn of events? I don’t think I’m in position to say that I can. I know that Ocean View has the severe talent edge over Saddleback, but can the “misplaced” (I say that with the most possible gratitude and graciousness allowed on this blog) players put up a road victory? I’m not entirely sure.

Analysis after the jump.

Offense:
Ocean View will need to immediately jump out to a big lead, attack the center of the field, and open up the running game after the passing game. Applying the “simple” running tactics too early could let the Runners key in on the blocking schemes. Hint hint, if you had any kind of scouting, you would notice where Charlie Webb and Kody Afusia are, and blitz their side on obvious running situations, and the opposite on passing downs. Tippy’s arm injury looks to have subsided, but should the stitches have any complications, it will be very interesting to see how the Hawks deal with it, if they deal with it at all; Nolan hasn’t split reps, throughout the season, and the staff has no inclination to go with Baca, that’s for sure.

Defense:
Contain... contain... contain... ever since Coach Jeff Anger left the squad, the defense hasn’t been the same. Missed tackles, lost containment, sheer stupidity. The unbearable 2nd and 3rd levels have only been saved by CW and KA... a common theme around here. The only competent defensive players that will return next year have been MC (Out with fractured shoulder and bruised knee), BW, and BH; all of them are juniors. On the lighter side, the Hawks shouldn’t have too much trouble with the “weaker” Saddleback offense.

Fearless Predictions:
OV needs to win this game, for the sake of the program. I say this because if the team does end up losing this game (and trust me... it is very possible with little to no motivation for underclassmen) the attendance and roster size will certainly shrink. I could tell you who would quit right now, but will stay mum for the sake of my credibility, and it isn’t a pretty list. IMO, if Eggers and Co. can’t wrangle this W, I think you need to say goodbye; no matter how much experience they all have, their results have been less than acceptable. Do I think it will be pretty? No, but do I like the Hawks?

Personally, I see this as a last stab at the recruiting trail for the seniors. They will leave it all on the field in an emotional battle. I can see it getting ugly should the game start slipping away from the Hawks, but it won’t.

OV: 34
Saddleback: 23

Best of luck to all of the seniors in any future endeavors on or off a football field.
Analysis after the jump

1. Oregon: Well the Gerhart train went right through the Ducks’ defense, but a solid in conference record should maintain them throughout the rest of the season. They are in control of their own destiny, and can either grab the roses, or let them fall to...a whale.

2. Arizona: The Cats are ready to prove their record. Their season finale with USC is right around the corner, and they are just dying to get cracking at that USC Secondary; that hasn’t been hard so far this year, and well Nick Foles is a pretty good QB.

3. Stanford: The tide has changed for the Cardinal. They’re within striking distance, and should they beat USC at the Coliseum, which has never looked as possible for Harbaugh and Co., they should get their final say at that Rose Bowl bid.

4. USC: It’s been a long time since the Trojans have been this far down. USC will have to bounce back from their terrible performance against ASU to even think about getting close to Stanford. Toby isn’t scared, and he’s coming right for you. Can Wonderboy Matt Barkley put his money where his mouth is? We won’t know until he brings the Trojans to the Rose Bowl like his ancestors have.

5. Oregon State: Well the Beavers just keep marching. They are set for yet another collision course in the Civil War against their rival poultry. If Canfield can keep it up, their offense will be practically unstoppable when teams have to come to the Rodgers’ Neighborhood.

6. Cal: I was scared, but how scared is Cal right now as Jahvid Best was carted off the field. It’s a terrible thought, but how can they bounce back now? Vereen will have to carry this team back to the thought of post season smiles with Riley almost falling off the rocker. They still have to play “Furd”, and that matchup doesn’t look any better than it did when the Bears trounced UCLA.

7. UCLA: It finally happened. I never thought it could, but UCLA’s offense broke through, torching the huskies for a 400+ yard performance. The Huskies hadn’t given up that many yards all year, and they played LSU, Idaho (Nothing to sneeze at, I’m serious), USC, Cal and Oregon. So quite frankly, you could say Norm Chow is smiling now that he has not one, but two QB’s at his disposal. The defense has been stagnant, at best, but signs of aggressiveness and playmaking in the young secondary might make you think DC Bullough has them headed in the right direction. They’ll play in Martin Stadium against a hungry, no starving WSU team; which has spelled out disaster for the Bruins in recent years. Should they pick up the win, they’ll play ASU on senior day, leaving them in position to be playing their best ball all year as they invade the Coliseum in their Blue uniforms.

8. ASU: Well boys, it looks like ASU has picked their QB. The 6’7” freak is looking like their man after Osweiller nearly staged the biggest upset since USC got beat by UW earlier on in the season. The Ducks won’t make anything easier on the Devils as they are angry and looking to focus on the roses with a much needed win. Can the Devils get lightning to strike twice? Well... strike once on a W, which is remotely close to where it struck last week...

9. Washington: Ouch, the Huskies force 5 turnovers and still can’t make the struggling UCLA Defense give up some points. Locker and company will need to regroup and get another few W’s to even think about bowling.

10. WSU: Fill in the blanks; The Cougars will look to regroup after losing to _______,(Enter score >30) to (Enter score <14). It’s all about optimism right? There are 2 “winnable” games, and I say that liberally, and 1 of them is this week. And it’s at home. Can the Cougs spoil UCLA’s turnaround?Josh Schlichterhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05681376087504634450noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2347308144410548147.post-87287873487308545882009-11-07T23:32:00.000-08:002009-11-07T23:32:14.517-08:00Satisfied

I was extremely nervous this morning; my dilemma was over the consistency of Kevin Prince and the Bruin offense. Today, Norm Chow and company really did a number on the UW Secondary today racking up a breakthrough 455 total yards, another benchmark performance for the rising Bruins. Box Score here. The theme today; Aggressiveness

When Prince started moving the ball, I couldn’t help but feel at ease. The comfort and “effortless” dynamic behind the offense really made me believe that we were going to win this game... and this was WAY before KP got hurt.

He was comfortable, in control, and a true threat. His release and timing was all compacted in his Post-Wheel combo play to Austin in the far corner of the field. It is arguably the hardest throw to make in all of football, and when Chow was convinced he had a QB that could handle it, the play was put in, and it worked like a charm. I still have yet to get confirmed evidence that KP will be back next week, so I won’t jump to any conclusions here. That being said, his limit is literally the Heisman, which is bold I know, but his development, IMO, is even better than the likes of Matt Barkley. I might be carried away, but he has a lot of things left to do before he leaves UCLA.

Anyways, when KP did go down, I was concerned... if that is the word for it. I heard that Prince had a great practice, which means, in context at least, that his reps weren’t split up, making Brehaut even less prepared. So, when Brehaut proved... once again... that he isn’t ready to play QB yet, I expected Craft to play should Prince not return. I was right, for once.

Next, Craft stepped in, and Chow kept that Aggressive nature up. It has been mentioned before, but the fact that Chow “pretended” it wasn’t Craft back there, definitely won the game for the Bruins. The vertical passing game from the slot and inside-out passing game showed up; the first time for Craft since he played against Tennessee last year, if you can even argue that. Also, the Flood play came back, and the extended pocket created by the line basically managed Craft into the game. By the way, Craft finished 10/14, for 159 yds with 1 TD and 1 INT.

One with will, determination, and certainty. Chane’s “willed” catch and carry was a microcosm of that sentence. I hope that UCLA can maintain this going to Futility U next week, pad their stats, and get 1 step closer to that bowl.

Towards the start of the second half, the blitzes and stunts came out in full force. First came the skulls (overload with LB and Corner), then came delayed blitzes (good for confusion for Locker), then came Engage Blitzes (Kamikaze). Basically, the entire season was one of uncertainty and hesitation, and the fact that Bullough pulled out the stops led me to believe that he is headed in the right direction, but I could be wrong.

This game ought-to-be fun though. Again just tidbits until tomorrow, but still
more formulated.

Something that I found important this week is the idea that Neuheisel and Co. are preparing for Locker... Even if he doesn't play. The Good News is that Ronnie Fouch is their back up, and he isn't on the same level as the past 8 QB's that UCLA has played (Pre-Crompton Rebirth Though). The Bad News is that Locker is one of the biggest playmakers in the Nation; He's a faster Tim-Tebow with great mechanics and strength, and he is looking like he is ready to go. The Worse news, Locker is good enough to be a decent pocket passer, so mobility shackles aren't going to get you out of the woods (also, Sark hasn't had the privelage of working with a mobile QB; and his playcalling hasn't helped exploit his strengths to a full degree).

On offense, UCLA seems to be jumping the gun right now, but that's just my opinion. There is no evidence that the Fresh Prince can have any consistency coming in to this week, but I have a feeling that the motto this week was to keep consistent. Sounds like a plan huh?

The UCLA running game will really have to step up the game. They have played some great running defenses, but have shot themselves in the foot time after time. If there was ever a week to get going; it's right here.

The team needs to set the goal of 4-0 to end this season. Unlike seasons past, this cause is definately within reach. All of these teams; IMO are beatable... Even for UCLA. 7-5 not only locks your bowl game down, you get unbelievable momentum going into the recruiting season and post-season.

13-9
-- Posted via Mobile
Josh Schlichterhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05681376087504634450noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2347308144410548147.post-44700508364155436212009-11-04T22:08:00.001-08:002009-11-05T11:06:37.750-08:00Holy-What a way to start off the season. UCLA wins... In dramatic fashion, against lowly Concordia, 62-61. From what I have read. The game was a mess, and the bipolar Bruins have some things to iron out. Analysis soon... Just got back from DC.. Really tired

13-9's Random Tidbits:

UCLA had their best offensive performance of the year in the 4th quarter of last week’s game @ Oregon State where they came up short on the final play of the game inside Beaver territory

UW Coaches Steve Sarkisian and Nick Holt have transformed the attitude of Husky football, encouraging them to one of the biggest upsets of the year, where the two ex-USC coaches topped their mentor, if that is the proper wording for it, Pete Carroll in a thrilling matchup in Seattle.

UCLA has had one of the toughest schedules to befall on a team so far this year, enroute to their 0-5 conference start. Among them were heavy-duty playmakers such as Toby Gerhart, LaMichael James (Ask USC about him), Jahvid Best, Nick Foles, and Jacquizz Rodgers... all in succession. Their defense hasn’t performed up to par though, as a lack of aggression in game planning has resulted in spiked YPG averages.

UW’s star QB, and surefire athlete, Jake Locker looks ready to go after being marketed as a “questionable” starter for Saturday’s game. He is bordering on 2000 yards, and has thrown 12 TD’s this season to 8 INT’s.

UCLA’s offense can’t just assume that their good fortune will continue, they need to continue the Airraid composition, get downfield, and then open up the running game. Chow is more than ready to get back to his own game of playcalling... instead of this “let’s let the defense screw it up for us” mentality that he hated from the get-go.

UW is coming in hungry; just like UCLA, the Huskies are leaving their bowl hopes to these final games, which are tasks hard enough. My advantage here would go to the Huskies, because... they’ve won at least ONE game in the PAC 10.

Is it because UCLA sucks and never beats USC?

-No, it is actually because it cost USC a National Championship in 2006, proving that the underdog can beat a dominant team, which was exactly what happened in that game. Also, if you should bother me about this, I will laugh and point to the 8 game winning streak the proceeded the Dorrell years.

How did you get entangled in UCLA?

-I was born at UCLA medical center, and I have only missed 2 home/away games in my life (both of them this year). So yep, I've seen UCLA lose and win... mostly lose, throughout my life.

Do you have a bias towards UCLA?

-Duh, but I'm what you call a realist. On USC week, at least for a few more years, I won't be saying how UCLA is going to dominate etc. I will approach it as strictly as possible. Sounds like a plan eh? I won't go off on you should I disagree with you though, if that's what you mean.

How did you get involved in Football and Coaching?

-During my sophomore year in high school, I tore my calf dropping back to pass, then went back in (like an idiot) and tore it further, crippling me. I can still walk, but I can't run for very long without my calf swelling. ANYWAYS, I was doodling some plays on the way to a game while I was out, the coach saw me writing those, and low-and-behold, we ran them! Turns out those plays ended up tripling the offensive output (80 yards) in 3 plays! Pretty cool huh? Someday, I plan on attending the USSA some day in the footsteps of Mike Leach.

Josh Schlichterhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05681376087504634450noreply@blogger.com0
